Photographer
I found my first camera at the age of 33, in a grey bag on the street,
of London, in 2019. It was an old Praktica 35mm camera, complete with three lenses.
I teach individuals how to effectively use their camera's
manual modes, enabling them to capture
high-quality photographs.
I conduct therapeutic photography workshops, where photography becomes a means of self-expression and self-observation.
I am learning how to crowdfund my first self-publishing editorial project: the book on love, sex, and relationships.
La Pecora Edizioni
I co-founded with Francesca Sand and Sarab Collective, La Pecora Edizioni, an independent publishing label established in 2021.
I am an artist member of Action Hybride. The collective's purpose is to organise interviews, exhibitions, performances, and talks that explore the themes of the body, memory, and the human condition.
It was truly exhilarating to observe the diverse interpretations of photographers on the same theme.
Viewing photography from a different perspective was one of the most meaningful experiences for me, and I sincerely hope to do it again soon. I understand that being objective in this context is not easy, but I evaluated all the photographs with honesty.
I am extremely proud to have achieved this goal and am profoundly grateful to life and the Monochrome Photography Awards for giving me the opportunity to test myself as a judge.
This educational journey has opened my eyes to the power of empathy, emotional intelligence, and the depth of art in exploring the human essence. As stated in the course description, "art may know man even better than science". Through art, we can express emotions, sensations, and meanings that are otherwise inexpressible. Indeed, art doesn't just reflect reality; it transfigures and transforms it, offering us new perspectives on our existence.
Through the Creative Autobiographical Method for Emotional Intelligence, I had the opportunity to explore my personal history profoundly. Creative autobiography allowed me to give voice to my most intimate experiences, emotions, and desires, transforming them not only into texts but also into new ways of working with photography, telling my story more personally. Every artistic work, whether photography, painting, writing, or otherwise, carries with it a hidden meaning beyond the superficial narrative, revealing an emotional world that allows viewers to explore new aspects of themselves.
With the skills acquired in art psychology, interpretation of artworks, and creative autobiography, I am now better able to apply this knowledge in various contexts, including photography as therapy, an aspect I am particularly interested in and am further exploring. Photography in this exploratory manner enhances the emotional well-being and personal growth of those involved.
Very grateful.
With the ultimate mission of celebrating monochrome visions and discovering great talents across the globe, Monochrome Photography Awards is one of the most coveted and enviable annual competitions in the field of amateur and professional photography.
From today until December 5th, along with 12 fellow photographers on the jury, we will examine and choose the winning photos submitted online, using a voting system ranging from 1 to 5.
Inside the judges' panel, I noticed that no names of the photographers, both professionals and amateurs, are mentioned; only a sequence of individual photos is presented. I appreciate that the author's name is not revealed, emphasising the strength of each image.
I'm grateful to be part of this new experience. Let's get to work!
Thank you, Monochrome Awards!
Hapax#4 Human consists of 88 pages, A4 size when closed and A3 size when open, featuring both color and black-and-white images. The internal pages are printed on "usomano business ultra white" 90g paper, while the cover is made of "matte coated paper" weighing 200g. Inside, you'll find texts, photos, drawings, and other images, all tied to the theme of the body and the human condition: vulnerability, stereotypes, identity, transformation, nudity, skin, flows, intimacy, and social aspects are among the explored themes. It is a rich collection with diverse and powerful universes. Each artist in the collective remains free to contribute within a collectively defined theme. Each issue of Hapax is then taken on by one of us for its conception.
This year, it was my turn. I created the new issue Hapax#4 HUMAN scheduled for November/December 2023, and we are launching pre-orders on Ulule, a crowdfunding platform. (A lovely self-published gift to place under the Christmas tree?). The photographs and drawings interact with each other and fully reveal when detached from the red elastic, transforming into A3 posters.
With the participation of Louise Dumont, Francesca Sand, Axelle Remeaud, Vanda Spengler, Fanny Gosse, Maria Clark, Louise A. Depaume, Mila Nijinsky, Géraldine Villemain, Layral Sébastien, Tamina Beausoleil, Karo Polikar, Amélia Fouillen, Emma Terno, Loredana Denicola.
HAPAX#4 "HUMAN": How does the definition of the human evolve? How is life defined, and what are the differences that separate animals, plants, humans, and the "non-human"? What are our responsibilities towards our peers, other forms of life, and the planet they inhabit? And what would life be like without us?
The fanzine is a project that combines art and creativity to explore essential themes of our existence and responsibilities. We have responsibilities towards our peers, other forms of life, and the planet.
"The definition of the human is constantly evolving, with an increasing awareness of the connections between animals, plants, humans, and the 'non-human.' Our responsibilities include promoting human rights, combating injustice, and protecting biodiversity and the environment. Without us, life on Earth would follow its natural course, offering unique opportunities and challenges for the planet and other forms of life. This urges us to reflect on our impact and the duty to preserve our world for future generations."

HAPAX#4 - HUMAN
I am thrilled to announce that I have been invited to serve as one of the judges for the prestigious 10th Annual Monochrome Awards, an International Black and White photography contest. Alongside other professional photographers, I will have the honour of evaluating and recognising outstanding photographic work from around the world.
The Monochrome Photography Awards stands as one of the most highly regarded and sought-after competitions within the realm of both amateur and professional photography. This incredible opportunity to collaborate with fellow judges and appreciate the remarkable artistry of photographers globally is an honour I deeply cherish.
The judging process will take place from November 13 to December 4, 2023, during which we will collectively assess the captivating single images submitted for this remarkable contest.
Stay tuned as we eagerly anticipate the unveiling of the winner's gallery, which is set to grace the online platform around January 7, 2024.
Thank you to the Monochrome Awards for this incredible opportunity,
The article covers my solo photographic exhibition titled "The camera as a mirror: intimate conversations with others, the world, and oneself, which is set to inaugurate this evening, June 9th, at 7 pm at the 'Il Castello' photographic club, FIAF of Taranto.
The exhibition is curated by Raimondo Musolino and Pierluca Lubello."
The artist approaches the "other," the "stranger within herself," with empathetic understanding and an almost therapeutic approach.
She observes, analyses, accepts, and assimilates the world through her work.
The camera isn't merely a medium "between" the photographer and the subject but rather an intermediary that fosters a relationship of trust.
Denicola explains her work: "I have great respect for people's differences. I've always wanted to approach and understand the stranger or the 'strange.' I'm also interested in self-estrangement, how we may hide and feel shame for aspects of ourselves. I believe that by talking to strangers without fear, by visiting them and listening to them, we can put aside prejudices and preconceptions, leading to understanding. The 'other' becomes one of us.
Additionally, through listening to honest accounts of others' lives, I hope to gain insights into my own life and find more self-acceptance."
She employs photography as a form of healing, using it as a means of self-observation through intimate conversations using images, text, and videos.
"Through photography, I can reexamine everything: who I am, what I think, what I feel, my upbringing, society, and religion. I work with people I encounter on the street or online. Instead of using my camera as a barrier or separation, I share control of the medium, allowing freedom of expression during the encounter. People present themselves as they are, without any imposition."
"By allowing myself to be physically and emotionally vulnerable, I encourage people to entrust me with their vulnerabilities. The final documentation is true, sincere, transparent, and sometimes startling. The camera is a mirror; the observer becomes the observed, and the mirror reflects the person. Do we like what we see?"
The displayed photos offer a glimpse into portraits of strangers from three projects carried out in London: "I am your mirror," "love, sex, and relationships," and "The theatre of the mind."
The exhibition will open on Friday, June 9, at 6:30 PM. Admission is free and open to all.
The exhibition will also be open to the public:
Saturday, June 10, and Sunday, June 11
From 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
We look forward to seeing you there!
In June, on the 9th, 10th, and 11th, I will have a photography exhibition within the Photographic Circle 'Il Castello,' FIAF of Taranto, titled 'The camera as a mirror. Intimate conversations with others, the world, and oneself,' and I am printing some of my photographs.
These are analog photographs taken using Ilford 120mm black and white film with a Mamiya II 6x7 camera. They are digitally scanned and printed on Canson Barita Prestige paper, 340 g/m2, with a glossy finish that enhances deep blacks and pure whites, delivering exceptional image quality.
Dimensions are 21 x 29.7 cm
These are open-edition fine art photographic prints, signed by me."
This project, developed over 40 hours of interviews and introduced in 2019 with a video trailer, consists of a series of conversations between Denicola and various individuals.
These conversations are part of a unique project that involves video documentation, photography, and writing. "love, sex, and relationships," which also includes an as-yet-unpublished book, was created with the intention of initiating a self-dialogue and exploring how emotional and psychological abuse, similar to physical and sexual abuse, can have destructive effects on an individual.
The interview with Loredana Denicola delves into her project and her personal life, past experiences, emotions, photography as a form of therapy, her fears, and approaches to dealing with psychological abuse.
The project is intricate but enlightening.

This endeavour comes to life through artistic collaboration with Miss Samantha Zenou.
The project's origins go back to a pre-Brexit and Covid-19 in London, where it took shape through interactions with twenty-five individuals, both couples and singles, who were encountered online and on the streets of this vibrant city.
At its core, the book poses a question: What does it mean 'to love'?
It explores a diverse spectrum of relationships, from heterosexual to homosexual, encompassing single mothers, divorced or separated couples, and more. Delving into the complexities of love, it unveils how an addiction to love can lead to emotional turbulence, including anxiety, violence, jealousy, pain, and confusion.
Within the pages of the book-project, photography, writing, and video documentation became a therapeutic journey.
It serves as a path to self-observation, self-discovery, and awareness.
The project aims to empower individuals on their personal journeys, fostering greater self-esteem, self-respect, and awareness, especially among women.
Moreover, the book of "love, sex, and relationships" represents a collective work of art, weaving together the creativity, self-expression, and lived experiences of all those who participated in the project.
This collective endeavour seeks to engage with the global community through dialogue, encouraging contemplation and reflection.
As a limited edition work of art and a self-published editorial project, the book will be produced through a public funding campaign.

If you explore Donya's story at this link: https://issuu.com/loredanadeni.../docs/_donya_pubbificazione you'll come across a photo of a carcass, 'la pecora,' indeed.
Loredana discovered it stranded on the beach of Cagliari, and she captured the image with a mobile phone. That single image left a profound impact on us, and it was from there that the name 'La Pecora edizioni' was born.
Sheep are humble and gentle animals. They are vulnerable yet serve humans by providing food and wool. Sheep live in groups; they are never alone. They embody unity, community, and the spirit of togetherness. The sheep spirit animal encourages us to be united, to cherish the power of friendship, and to support and uplift one another. This attitude contributes to making the Earth a better place to live— a place where great things happen when we come together.
Donya is the inaugural story of La Pecora Edizioni, and the name was chosen by Nahid. 'Donya' is a term in Farsi, the language of Persia, often used as a woman's name but also translating to 'world.'
La Pecora edizioni is a collaborative effort of Loredana, Francesca, Gianluca, and Nahid, and the video was produced by the Sarab Collective.

This project is an exploration of the facets of the human mind. It begins as a personal journey for the artist but extends to the public, fostering a dialogue with the viewer/spectator. It's a video-photographic project rooted in trust, self-exploration through others as a means of enrichment and discovery, and acceptance. After all, everything that irritates us in others often reveals something about ourselves.
Following the exhibition, some of the videos and photos will remain on display in the internal space of Nervegna for an entire week, until the following Thursday.
Prejudice doesn't solely affect individuals or groups; it can permeate entire cultures and influence behaviours towards other cultures.
What are our thoughts? Are we free from fears, conditioning, and prejudices?
The characters featured in this project include:
Alan, the cross-dresser
Humaira, I choose my religion, Islam
Stephanie, finally I am a woman!
Madkillermiller, an unimportant person with a business card
Louis Grey Magus is my alter ego
Tacco Matto, I am my emotions
Graça and her imaginary dogs
The videos are in English with Italian subtitles. The Italian subtitles have been edited by me and professors Francesco Bucci, Barbara Baldassarre, Francesco Tommasi, and Rita Greco.
'The theatre of the mind' extends an invitation to engage fully and empathetically with the subjects' stories. The audience is encouraged to approach the work with sincerity, courage, and freedom.

'The theatre of the mind' will be unveiled to the public as a compelling exhibition of video art and photography, curated by Ilaria Caravaglio and Valeria Gatti.
Commencing on September 16th and running until October 28th, we invite you to join us every Thursday in the garden of Café Nervegna.
In the presence of the artist and curators, we will present and screen one of the seven videos that constitute this project.
Embarking on what can only be described as an exploratory journey into the intricacies of the human mind, we will engage in reflections prompted by each video, each story, and each character.
Following the screening, selected videos and photographs will remain on display within Café Nervegna's welcoming interior space for the entire week, until the subsequent Thursday.
'The Theatre of the Mind' is a video-photographic project that rests on the foundations of trust—an exploration of the self through the other as a means of enrichment and discovery. It champions acceptance, reminding us that everything that irritates us in others holds a mirror to our own selves.
This project beckons us to ponder our thoughts, to question whether we are truly free from fears, conditioning, and prejudices."

Exposition collective, performances, projection films, workshop

'Love Yourself' photography workshop, curated by Loredana Denicola, is set to begin on September 7th in Ginosa.
This unique workshop is exclusively dedicated to women who have received support from the "Sud Est Donne" anti-violence center, which can be found at https://www.sudestdonne.it/.
In Italy, a staggering six million women have experienced various forms of physical or sexual violence. Shockingly, only 11% of these women report these incidents, leaving the majority to suffer in silence and fear alongside their children. These are women who often continue to endure violence, often from their own partners, and who struggle to assert their right to a life free from male violence.
The genesis of "Love Yourself" dates back to roughly 2016 when it began as a photographic and video project focused around women and men who had experienced abusive relationships, physical and psychological violence.
The project was conceptualised by photographer Loredana Denicola upon her return to Italy after residing in London for eleven years. Denicola's artistic exploration focuses on intimacy, its transformative potential, and the strength that can emerge from fragility once understood.
Photography, within this context, becomes an opportunity and a choice to narrate one's own story, to expose the past, and to depict the imagined and desired present. It entails "looking through the viewfinder" to peer into oneself, to make choices, to be..., to say, and to tell one's story in a renewed and distinctive manner.
Photographs grant the power to be both the author and the subject, an opportunity to view one's personal reality from the perspective of an inner witness. It's a journey towards no longer being victims, no longer enslaved by past events.
Since 2013, Loredana Denicola has been working in London on a variety of photographic projects involving individuals eager to shed light on issues such as sexuality, gender equality, prejudice, love, physical and psychological abuse, negative thinking, and illness.
The "South East Women" center in Martina Franca is the pioneering anti-violence center to have embraced this project and promote it to its female beneficiaries.
I will be teaching you the fundamentals of photography.

The course will run for a duration of four weeks.
This photography course is designed specifically for beginners. It aims to provide you with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of light and photography. We will cover basic camera operations, including aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, and how these elements creatively interact with each other. Additionally, we'll explore composition (both conventional and unconventional), white balance, understanding light and shadows, different perspectives, lenses, and more.
The course will also include practical exercises to enhance your learning experience.
Each lesson will have a duration of two hours per week.
Beyond that, it will be up to you, driven by your determination and tenacity, to put these concepts into practice.
