In Japanese society, Otaku refers to individuals with an intense passion for a subject or hobby that lies outside the norms of their professional lives. This fine art piece is part of the broader photography project I Am Your Mirror, which investigates themes of hidden identity, societal expectations, and the tension between conformity and self-expression.
In this photograph, the subject chose to be portrayed through his passion for Shibari - a Japanese artistic form of rope work whose name means “to tie.”
Here, Shibari becomes a visual metaphor for the invisible restraints and emotional powerlessness imposed by corporate life.
The Businessman echoes the experience of many Japanese salarymen, who often devote their entire careers to one company, constrained by rigid expectations and limited personal freedom. Using the language of Shibari, the image captures the internal struggle between outward roles and inner truth, offering a powerful commentary on identity, repression, and the cost of professional devotion.
